A trip back in time

I last visited the Youth Hostel in Castleton nearly 50 years ago! I remember the big old hall with its wide staircase and big fireplaces. We shared dormitories on bunk beds and met outside in our groups before heading out to explore the local area.

I had to return and try it again!

I booked one night and planned a couple of days walking, with Edale and Kinder Scout being my main goal.

I loved the old building and the staff from the YHA could not be better. The whole atmosphere in the place was friendly, with different travellers all willing to chat about their plans whilst there.

Castleton never fails to deliver and I have visited many times, so am aware of local routes and hotspots.

Not a great few days for photography, but the route from Edale to Kinder Scout via Grindsbrook Clough did not disappoint. Warm weather and a stunning route with a bit of clambering on rocks to get to the top of the Clough.

The rock formations on the tops snd the views across Edale certainly made the effort worthwhile.

I descended down Jacobs Ladder and headed back to the cafe on the campsite in Edale for a toastie and a well earned cuppa.

Great route and a memorable visit to an old but beautiful hostel.
